Moscow and Damascus are delineating new contours of bilateral relations. This was announced on October 15 by Izvestia correspondent Anton Zolotnitsky before a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the head of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) for the transitional period, Ahmed al-Sharaa.

"Moscow and Damascus are delineating new contours of bilateral relations. They are based on a clear understanding. We have decades of cooperation and close ties in the humanitarian, military-technical spheres, and in regional politics," the journalist noted.

According to him, Russia occupies a unique position in the Middle East. He also added that the new authorities in Damascus are aware of this and strive to maintain dialogue.

The correspondent stressed that the focus of Russian policy in the Middle East remains unchanged — pragmatic business contacts with all key players in the region.

Al-Sharaa's planned visit to Moscow became known a day earlier. On September 12, the head of the republic said that Syria seeks to maintain and preserve close historical ties with Russia. He also noted that Syria has been able to build good relations with the United States and Western countries, as well as maintain calm relations with Russia and establish relations with the entire region.
