Rospotrebnadzor has introduced new regulations for the control of the turnover of biologically active additives, which may enter into force in 2026. The draft document sets out clear criteria for banning substandard products, including lack of registration and non-conformity of composition. Details can be found in the Izvestia article.

Grounds for banning dietary supplements

Rospotrebnadzor has submitted for public discussion a draft list of grounds for banning the sale of biologically active additives. The document provides for five key criteria: lack of state registration, detection of prohibited substances, incomplete information about the manufacturer, sale under the guise of food products and non-compliance of the composition with the declared characteristics. The head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, proposed setting the date of introduction of the new rules on March 1, 2026.

According to the agency's idea, dietary supplements are considered "effective" if the substances included in them are included in the clinical recommendations of the Ministry of Health and official documents developed by medical centers or professional associations.

What are dietary supplements: their benefits and harms

Biologically active additives are designed to compensate for nutritional deficiencies and normalize metabolic processes. The effectiveness of individual components has been scientifically confirmed: calcium and vitamin D for strengthening bone tissue, folic acid during pregnancy, vitamin C for the prevention of vitamin deficiency. However, many supplements, including collagen and chlorophyll, do not have convincing clinical evidence of effectiveness.

Taking dietary supplements carries certain risks, including toxic effects on the liver and kidneys, allergic reactions, and the presence of hidden ingredients or heavy metals. Special care should be taken by pregnant women, children and people with chronic diseases. Consult your doctor before taking any supplements.

How dietary supplements differ from medicines

Biologically active additives are not medicinal products and are subject to sanitary and hygienic rather than pharmacological certification. The key difference is that clinical trials are not required for the registration of dietary supplements, while medicines undergo multi-stage safety and efficacy tests. In addition, systematic data on side effects are usually not available for dietary supplements due to the lack of clinical trials.
