NATO countries are discussing the possibility of simplifying the rules that will allow shooting down Russian fighter jets if they appear over the territory of the alliance states. This was reported on October 14 by The Telegraph newspaper, citing sources.

According to the newspaper, the initiative is aimed at creating a more flexible response system in case Russian aircraft allegedly pose a potential threat.

"The heads of the defense departments want Russian aircraft carrying missiles for strikes against ground targets to be considered as possible targets," the source said.

The commander-in-chief of NATO forces in Europe, General Christopher Grinkevich, according to The Telegraph, proposed the creation of a unified air and missile defense system. Such a step, in his opinion, will eliminate national restrictions that prevent the use of force in response to a threat.

The issue is expected to be considered by the alliance's defense ministers at a meeting on Wednesday.

Earlier, on October 3, Estonia threatened to respond to Russia in other areas, including maritime, for a possible violation of airspace. The country's Foreign Ministry secretary, Jonathan Vsevolod, said that Estonia has anti-ship missiles with a range of up to 300 km and recalled that NATO can respond "at any time and in any form."
