- The suspended rector of St. Petersburg State Unitary Enterprise Zapesotsky denied charges of embezzlement
On October 14, Alexander Zapesotsky, the suspended rector of the St. Petersburg University of the Humanities of Trade Unions (SPbGUP), rejected the accusations of the Russian Prosecutor General's Office of attempting to misappropriate state property through appeals to the courts.
"For example, sometimes working for the university for up to 16 hours a day, I actually ordered personal trips more than once through assistants at the university. But I always deposited money at the university's cash desk," he said in an address in the presence of journalists.
He added that almost all the trips included a business program, popularization of Russia and the university, meetings with scientists, cultural, art and educational figures.
In addition, the former rector stated that he intends to sue the newspaper Kommersant because of their article, in which he called the information unreliable.
The day before, Kommersant reported that the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation had charged Zapesotsky with embezzling 74 million rubles for trips abroad and paying bills at restaurants.
In September, the Arbitration Court of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region decided to dismiss Zapesotsky from the post of rector of St. Petersburg State University. He was charged with attempts to legalize the illegal seizure of state property through court proceedings against the background of concealing the fact of construction of facilities at the expense of the state.
On October 6, it was reported that the committee of the St. Petersburg State University Students' trade union sent an appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the dismissal of Rector Zapesotsky and the appointment of Evgeny Lubashev in his place. Later, the court granted the claim of the Prosecutor General's Office and decided to seize the academic building, dormitory and other buildings of the St. Petersburg University of the Humanities of Trade Unions from illegal possession.
