The Russian Federation has approved a plan to bring unmanned vehicles to the roads
Russia has approved a roadmap for putting unmanned vehicles on the roads. The plan for the introduction of fifth-level automation machines includes the creation of a regulatory framework, the development and testing of such vehicles and the preparation of a concept for the development of the cargo transportation market, taking into account drones until 2035. The press service of the Ministry of Transport announced this in its Telegram channel on October 14.
The roadmap was approved at a meeting led by Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Saveliev with the participation of the Head of the Ministry of Transport Andrey Nikitin. The plan provides for the expansion of zones where the movement of drones is allowed, as well as the opening of new routes.
The ministry said that by the end of 2026, a system of digital road doubles should be operational to control the movement of such vehicles, including the M-12 Vostok highway. In the same year, tests of the fifth level of automation truck will begin. Saveliev instructed the Ministry of Transport to prepare and submit to the government a law on unmanned vehicles in the first quarter of next year. Currently, 90 trucks of the 3rd level of automation are already driving on the roads of Russia.
According to Nikitin, the roadmap will allow defining the features and limitations of the operation of unmanned vehicles, duties and responsibilities of manufacturers, owners and drivers. The possibility of extending legal regulation not only to wheeled, but also to rail transport is also being studied.
On October 2, the Russian government announced that statistics on the actual mileage of cargo drones plying the M-11 and the Central Ring Road would become public. The data about it will be disclosed by the Ministry of Transport and GLONASS JSC.
On August 13, it became known that an autonomous Navio tractor covered the 1,600 km St. Petersburg-Kazan route in a day. The truck drove along the M-11 Neva, A-113 Central Ring Road and M-12 Vostok highways in 24 hours. At the same time, a standard flight from St. Petersburg to Kazan takes an average of 58 hours, as the driver must comply with the work and rest regime.
