- October 16 is the feast of the Trubchevskaya Icon of the Mother of God: what made the image famous, who helps
The Orthodox Church celebrates the day of the Trubchev Icon of the Mother of God on October 16. This image, known for its miraculous healings, provides spiritual help in the fight against diseases and trials. In 2025, the holiday falls on a Thursday. Izvestia tells us what the miraculous image is known for and who it helps.
The history of the church holiday on October 16
The Trubchev icon got its name due to the inscription on the reverse side, indicating its origin. According to these data, the image was painted in 1765 in the city of Trubchevsk, Orel province, which today is the administrative center in the Bryansk region. The icon was created by Hieromonk Euthymius of the Cholna Monastery.
In honor of the miraculous image, a church was built at the monastery, consecrated on October 16 (according to the old style — October 3). On this day, a celebration is held in honor of the Trubchevskaya icon. Later, the icon was transported to the Troitsk Monastery in the Narovchatsky district of the Penza region. It is assumed that the icon was donated to the monastery and moved from Trubchevsk to Narovchat.
The image became widely known at the end of the 18th century. Then cholera spread to Narovchat and the villages closest to it. Panic-stricken residents turned to the monks for help. A procession with the Trubchev icon was held around the city, after which the disease receded. Since then, the image has been revered as miraculous.
The fate of the icon in the 20th century
In the 1930s, the Troitsk Monastery was looted and turned into a poultry farm. The icon ended up in the local museum of local lore. She lay in the back rooms for almost 50 years, until in 1993 she was discovered by the servants of the newly established monastery. The shrine was already listed as lost in the museum's lists. After restoration in the workshops of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, the icon returned to the monastery. Divine services and solemn processions with the icon are held in the temple every year on the holiday.
Iconography of the Trubchev Icon of the Mother of God
The Trubchev icon of the Mother of God belongs to the Odigitria type, which means "Guide Book" in Greek. The Mother of God is depicted wearing a crown, with a scepter and a power holding the baby Jesus Christ on her left hand. Her robes, as well as the baby's clothes, are decorated with floral ornaments, which symbolizes grace and light. Sacred texts glorifying the Lord and the Blessed Virgin are placed in the corners of the icon.
Who is helped by the miraculous image
Orthodox Christians believe that the icon has a unique power. Immediately after her appearance, amazing healings began to occur. One of the famous cases occurred when a woman with tuberculosis from Saransk visited the monastery and prayed in front of the icon. After the prayer service, she took with her the oil from the lamp in front of the icon and, having smeared herself with it, she was cured of her illness.
Even today, many parishioners gather to pray in front of the icon. It is believed that the miraculous image helps in a variety of life situations, and on the day of the feast, the power of prayer increases many times. They pray in front of the icon both in church and at home, the main thing is that prayer comes from a pure heart.
