The Ministry of Internal Affairs warned about scammers when buying cars through messengers

Scammers who create accounts offering services for the transportation and purchase of cars from abroad have become more active in messengers. On October 14, the Department for combating the Illegal use of information and communication Technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia (UBK of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation) reported this in its Telegram channel.

The department warned that the attackers are taking advantage of the high growth in demand for the purchase of used foreign cars with delivery from other countries, offering favorable conditions and short delivery times.

"One of the requirements is payment in cryptocurrency. The victim is offered to install an application for a crypto wallet, and then they are asked to transfer a large amount of money "to confirm solvency" or an introductory payment," the UBK of the Ministry of Internal Affairs noted.

Other typical signs of fraud are an offer to buy a car at a price significantly lower than the market price, insistent calls for a quick deal under the pretext of price increases, as well as clicking on links from strangers to allegedly confirm the payment or process documents.

The agency recommended that citizens carefully approach offers to buy cars at "too favorable" prices, avoid payments in cryptocurrency, and also never follow links from strangers and do not tell third parties the codes from SMS and bank card data.

Earlier, on October 8, it was reported that in September 2025, 10.7 thousand used passenger cars were imported from South Korea to Russia, which is 68% more than in September 2024. The increase compared to the previous month was 3.5%.

Before that, on October 7, it became known that in September 2025, 9.9 thousand used passenger cars were imported from China to Russia. This is a quarter more than in August of this year, and four times more than in September 2024.
