A foreigner will stand trial for smuggling mammoth tusks in the Amur region.
In the Amur region, the prosecutor's office has approved an indictment against a foreigner who tried to illegally export more than 100 kg of mammoth tusks from Russia. This was reported on October 14 on the website of the prosecutor's office in the region.
The attacker bought the animal remains from an unidentified person. The total weight of the sawn parts of the tusks was 116.05 kg. The foreign citizen planned to take out cultural treasures in a tractor trailer, but was stopped at a checkpoint across the border of the Russian Federation and China.
"During the border inspection, eight pieces of woolly mammoth tusks worth 3 million rubles, hidden from customs control, were discovered and seized by employees of the Border Department of the Federal Security Service of Russia in the Amur Region," the department said.
The attacker is accused of a crime under Part 1 of Article 226.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "(Illegal movement of cultural property on a large scale across the customs border of the Eurasian Economic Union"). Under this article, he could face up to five years in prison.
Earlier, on August 29, a man tried to export $32,000 worth of ancient artifacts from Uzbekistan to Russia. 325 antique coins, jewelry, artifacts, weights, as well as bow and arrow tips, which were not declared, were found in the hand luggage and bags of a citizen who left the republic.
