Unknown people stole a tuber of a rare amorphophallus titanicus, a plant known as the smelliest flower in the world, from the Rombergpark Botanical garden in Dortmund, Germany. During flowering, it exudes a strong smell of carrion, attracting pollinating insects. This was reported by Spiegel magazine on October 13.

Unknown people dug out a tuber weighing 20-30 kg from a pot, which was named "David" by the staff of the garden. The city administration has already filed a complaint with the police.

"The theft of the David was a heavy blow to us. Many Dortmund residents were waiting for the next bloom. We hope that the thieves will regret their decision and return the plant," said an employee of the botanical garden.

He also added that the loss was "huge for the city."

Earlier, on June 27, at the Botanical Garden Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, scientists for the first time successfully cloned a rare honey plant, the hairy acorn, listed in the Red Book. It was noted that he has the same status in the Republic of Belarus and Estonia. Specialists have managed to grow about a hundred clones, which will preserve the endangered species.
