Cranberries have a unique set of beneficial properties, but they also have certain contraindications. This was announced to Izvestia on October 14 by Acting Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the State University of Education Irina Lyalina.
According to the expert, this berry is rich in vitamins C, E, K, minerals, organic acids and special antioxidants — proanthocyanidins, while remaining a low-calorie product.
Cranberries are especially valuable for the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections. The proanthocyanidins contained in it prevent the attachment of E. coli bacteria to the bladder wall, which reduces the risk of relapses.
"The antioxidant properties of the berry help reduce oxidative stress, protect cells and blood vessels, improve the lipid profile and reduce inflammation. Cranberry fiber has a beneficial effect on intestinal motility, and organic acids stimulate appetite and digestive processes," the specialist added.
However, she warned about important limitations. Cranberries contain oxalates, so if they are prone to kidney stones, their consumption should be limited. Cranberry juice can enhance the effect of the anticoagulant warfarin, which requires mandatory medical supervision.
Excessive consumption of berries can cause heartburn and upset stomach. Pregnant and lactating women are advised to consume cranberries only in moderation, and concentrated supplements should be avoided without consulting a doctor.
The expert also noted that sweet fruit drinks, juices and jams made from cranberries lose their benefits due to the high sugar content. The most useful forms of consumption are fresh or frozen sugar-free berries, as well as 100% natural juices without additives. A reasonable daily allowance for most people is 50-100 grams of fresh berries.
