Latvia's actions towards Russians who have not confirmed their knowledge of Latvian are Nazism. This was stated on October 13 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

On October 11, the official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry, Irina Volk, announced the assistance of the Russian authorities to 800 Russian citizens who were deported from Latvia due to ignorance of the official language. She also recalled that since 2006, there has been a state program to facilitate the voluntary resettlement of compatriots living abroad to the Russian Federation.

Prior to that, on October 10, the Politico newspaper reported on the forced deportation from Latvia of over 800 Russians by October 13 due to non-compliance with migration regulations. In 2024, Latvia tightened the immigration law for Russian citizens. Thus, in order to obtain the status of a long-term resident of the European Union (EU), it is necessary to submit an application, as well as show proficiency in the Latvian language at the A2 level. In addition, security and background checks should also be completed before June 30, 2025.
