A new stage of the wildlife resettlement program has begun in Primorye. Two Far Eastern leopards, a male and a female, were transferred to the Ussuriysky Reserve to restore the population.

The goal of the program is to expand the range of red book animals, to form a stable population in the southern part of Sikhote—Alin with at least 25 individuals genetically related to the main group in the national park "Land of the Leopard", writes IA UssurMedia with reference to the press service of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Land of the Leopard".

They explained that the transfer took place in a "gentle way." At the place of release, the leopards were placed in special enclosures. There they will gradually adapt, and then they will be able to leave the enclosures on their own without human intervention. This should minimize stress for the animals and make the process as safe as possible for them.

Before the relocation, the leopards were examined by veterinarians. They were selected based on their age and health. The movement of the animals is monitored using satellite collars and photomonitoring. Scientists can track the behavior and adaptation of animals in a new environment.

Leopards have not been seen in the Ussuriysk Nature Reserve for more than half a century. The project is being implemented by the Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the support of the Land of the Leopard and the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization Far Eastern Leopards. The translocation program was approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation. Elena Gangalo, Director General of the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization Far Eastern Leopards, called the translocation a "historic step" that returns the leopard to the places where it was exterminated in the past.

Earlier it was reported that VTB, together with the St. Petersburg State University Graduate School of Management and the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization Far Eastern Leopards, developed an AI assistant to help preserve the Far Eastern leopard. A digital assistant has been created that changes the approach to preserving the unique nature of the Far East.
