There has been a surge in fraudulent mailings worldwide, allegedly on behalf of major air carriers and airports, Kaspersky Lab said on October 13 at the GITEX Global 2025 international technology forum, which is being held in Dubai.

To attract companies, they are offered to register as a potential supplier and get the opportunity to become a partner of a well-known brand. In September, several thousand fraudulent emails of this kind were revealed.

So, the authors of the messages, according to Kaspersky Lab, pose as representatives of the procurement departments of large airlines such as Emirates Airlines, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, or airports, including Schiphol (Amsterdam). In their letters, they talk about allegedly launching new projects and business expansion programs and looking for suppliers or contractors. If a representative of the company responds to the offer of cooperation, at the next stage, for greater persuasiveness, the attackers will send forged documents to fill out and sign, including a supplier registration form and a non-disclosure agreement.

The ultimate goal of the scammers is to force the organization to pay a deposit of several thousand dollars, ostensibly to reserve a priority place in the list of partners. In Russian-language letters of this kind, the required amount exceeded 1 million rubles. This payment, according to the assurances of the letter authors, will be refunded in full after the establishment of the partnership. But the attackers embezzle the money for themselves.

"The attackers have confidence in the brand and expect that the possibility of cooperation with a major market player cannot but be interesting to the business. Since the documents in these mailings do not contain malicious code, basic security checks may sometimes miss such messages," warned Anna Lazaricheva, senior spam analyst at Kaspersky Lab.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that phone scammers began pretending to be law enforcement officials, using their Telegram numbers to intimidate victims. To avoid fraud, experts advised to be careful about unsolicited calls and messages in mail and messengers.
