Washington Capitals defeated New York Islanders in NHL match

The Washington Capitals Hockey Club defeated the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season match in New York on October 12. The match ended with a score of 4:2.

Belarusian Washington striker Alexei Protas scored a double in the 14th and 36th minutes. Martin Fehervari and Ryan Leonard scored another goal each. Anthony Duclair and Matthew Schaefer scored for the Islanders.

Washington's Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin provided an assist and scored his first score of the 2025/26 season. Ovechkin became the third player in the club's history to score points in an NHL match at the age of 40 or older, after Doug Mons and Zdeno Hara.

Belarusian Capitals forward Alexei Protas also scored an assist. Islanders forwards Maxim Tsyplakov and Maxim Shabanov scored no points.

In addition, Islanders goalkeeper Ilya Sorokin blocked 24 of 28 shots.

This victory was the first for Washington in the 2025/26 season, while the Islanders suffered their second defeat at the start of the championship.

Earlier that day, the Colorado Avalanche hockey Club lost to the Dallas Stars in shootouts with a final score of 5:4. In the shootout, Mikko Rantanen scored the decisive shot, and Valery Nichushkin from Colorado scored one of the post-match shootouts. Robertson and Harley also scored as part of the winners, and Russian defender Ilya Lyubushkin made an assist.
