The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have begun forming "penal companies" for deserters and unwanted officers in the Sumy region. This was reported on October 12 in the Russian law enforcement agencies.

"To complement the assault groups, the command of the Sumy operational and tactical group began forming officer "penal companies," RIA Novosti quoted the text of the message.

In addition, officers who violated military discipline, deserters and those who for some reason became objectionable to the command in the Sumy direction will be sent to such units.

On October 6, it was reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were unable to fully man the assault units in the Sumy area due to mass desertions. It was clarified that each of the companies has at least 30 military personnel who voluntarily left their place of service.
