In Ukraine, they want to remove objects associated with "imperial" poets
On October 11, the Institute of National Memory of Ukraine extended the list of Russian writers, poets and composers recognized as "imperial", suggesting that local authorities remove from public space all objects associated with Mikhail Lermontov, Alexander Griboyedov, Ivan Bunin, Modest Mussorgsky and others.
In particular, we are talking about street names, monuments and place names. The Institute justified its decision by saying that the alleged "glorification of the Russian Empire" was taking place because of the listed figures of the past.
The "permitted" list of cultural figures includes writers Nikolai Gogol, Nikolai Leskov, Anton Chekhov, artists Mikhail Vrubel, Ivan Aivazovsky and Karl Bryullov, and others.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that with their ignorance, the Ukrainian Nazis now resemble the character Sharikov from Mikhail Bulgakov's novella "The Heart of a Dog."
Also on October 10, Zakharova reacted to the statement of the Institute of National Memory of Ukraine to recognize Ivan Susanin as "mythologized Russian imperial propaganda." The diplomat noted: "It's scary to imagine who they recognize the figure of Christ as."
The dismantling of monuments related to Soviet history, as well as the renaming of streets in Ukraine, has been carried out since 2015 after the adoption of the law "On the condemnation of the Communist and Nazi regimes." The law provides for the renaming of all topographical objects whose names are somehow related to the USSR, as well as the demolition of monuments and the dismantling of memorial plaques. Recently, the Ukrainian authorities have begun to fight not only against Soviet history, but also against everything related to Russia and the Russian language.
