In his memoirs, former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke about the conflict situation with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, when she was disappointed by his too much indulgence of US actions within the framework of the military alliance. A fragment of the book was published by RBC on October 11.

Meeting with Stoltenberg after his appointment, the Chancellor instructed him not to comply with any request from the United States, but to preserve equality.

"I hope that you will not fulfill every request of the Americans, Jens. It is important that the United States does not always get its way." Stoltenberg assured her that he was not going to "obey the United States in all respects," the media quoted a quote from the German version of the publication.

A few weeks after this conversation, at the EU summit in Brussels with Stoltenberg, Merkel did not even deign to nod her head in response to the greeting.

"I'm so disappointed, Jens. You just took a position in the interests of the Americans. The United States cannot determine everything for NATO," the politician explained later.

Before that, on October 5, The Guardian newspaper reported that the former NATO Secretary General also told in his memoirs how Merkel once laughingly reacted to US President Donald Trump's demand to increase German defense spending to 2% of GDP. Stoltenberg clarified that this happened during a personal meeting between Merkel and Trump, when the latter demanded an increase in military spending and added an audacious phrase: "Angela, you have to fork out."
