An esports tournament was held in Moscow between the teams of the Ministry of Defense and other law enforcement agencies in the format of the so-called tactical duathlon. The winner was the team of the Peter the Great Strategic Missile Forces Military Academy. It is planned that by 2026 this discipline will become an official sport. All participants first compete at computers in the popular Counter-Strike 2 game, and then in fire training at the training ground. Why do law enforcement agencies need computer games — in the material of Izvestia.

Cyber competitions as a key sports trend

On October 10, the final of the tactical duathlon tournament was held in Moscow. It was held for the second time in a closed format, organized by the Department of Information Systems of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the Cyber Patriot Club, the Computer Sports Association and CSKA. An application has already been submitted to grant biathlon the status of an official sport in Russia. The organizers expect to receive it in 2026.

Tactical duathlon consists of esports and military sports disciplines. In the first round, the players participated in fire training at the training ground — they competed in target shooting with real small arms (AK-74M and PM). This part of the tournament was held on the territory of the SSK CSKA Shooting Club. Izvestia was the only media outlet allowed to demonstrate the participants' performances.

In the second round, the organizers placed the participants in the Cyber School building, which belongs to school No. 2200. There, on the big screen, representatives of eight teams competed in marksmanship in the tactical shooter Counter-Strike 2. On the part of the Ministry of Defense, the teams "Secret" (Krasnodar Higher Military School named after Army General Shtemenko), Revolt (branch of the Military Academy of the Peter the Great Strategic Missile Forces), "Fugas" (Tyumen Higher Military Engineering Command School named after Marshal of Engineering Troops Proshlyakov) and "Armata" (branch of the Military Academy of the Omsk Armored Infantry engineering Institute).

Teams of law enforcement agencies fought against them — "Victory Federation" (Voronezh Institute of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia), "Nevsky Lions" (St. Petersburg University of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia), "RUI MIA" (Rostov Law Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia) and "G6" (Kaliningrad branch of the St. Petersburg University of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia).

Shooting in the game correlates well with practice on a real shooting range, says the head of the Revolt team, head of the Department of Computer Science of the SVI RV, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Colonel Alexander Borovkov. He recalled that in reality, before the operation, reconnaissance is conducted from a quadcopter, then a tactical map is formed. Gamers understand better than others where the hiding spots are located and how to apply their skills of playing on the map directly in life.

The organizers called their main goal "the education of a healthy, physically and spiritually perfect, morally stable personality through esports competitions." The qualifying competitions were held on October 8-9, following the results of the final, Revolt took first place, G6 won silver, and the Secret team from the Ministry of Defense took bronze.

— The younger generation is actively interested in Counter-Strike 2. The game develops not only the speed of reaction, but also the speed of decision-making in emergency situations. All employees of law enforcement agencies need it," said Alexey Anpin, the supervisor of the Nevsky Lions team, an employee of the State Border Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia.

Experts believe in the future of esports

According to Ratibor Popov, founder of the Association of Computer Sports and the OnlyMVP esports platform, such activities had not been seriously considered before, but during a special military operation, the military realized the potential of esports games and gamers. The expert believes that international level competitions between the armies of different countries will take place in the coming years.

— The assignment of the status of an official sport for tactical duathlon is at the final stage. The final stage is now underway, and I am sure that in 2026 athletes will begin to receive ranks," he explained.

According to Denis (call sign Mir), a representative of the national team of the Central Military District, the two—man event has real prospects with the right approach - if you make military esports players. To do this, it is necessary to popularize the duathlon and increase the prestige of the status of a serviceman.

— Modern conditions (fast computers, large screens, infrastructure) They promote high-level esports tournaments. Esports is a new direction that gives young people, especially from remote regions, a chance to realize themselves, earn money, develop skills and get the opportunity to build a successful career. This allows us to count on and even apply for the continuation of the tournament process at an increasingly high quality level," said Roman Putin, organizer of the Russian Extreme Cross sports festival.

According to Violetta Fadeeva, Professor of the Department of Administrative and Legal Discipline of Information Support for Internal Affairs Bodies at the Kaliningrad Branch of the St. Petersburg University of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, games instill the ability to work in a team and self-control. It is important for a gamer to hear his teammate, the ability to get together and obey commands. Counter-Strike 2 not only provides discipline in the group, but also instills self-discipline. And Counter-Strike 2 fans have a higher survival rate than those who don't play, according to research, she added.

— Adding games to military training is useful. These soldiers have faster neural connections and faster reaction speeds. And Counter-Strike 2 itself is at a high level in Russia, two Russian players (donk and mONESY) are among the top five esports players in the world. The potential of the discipline is high, although I think airsoft or paintball would be more appropriate. They allow us to understand how a person handles a weapon, how he acts in a particular situation," said Dmitry, a corporal in the Airborne Forces, a member of the Free Military with the call sign Kostroma, winner of two medals For Bravery.
