A sixteen-year-old Muscovite woman set fire to her apartment while trying to open her parents' safe on the instructions of phone scammers. This was announced on October 11 by the press service of the Moscow Prosecutor's office.

"The fire occurred when a 16-year-old girl, following the instructions of telephone scammers, used a grinder to open a safe," the prosecutor's office said.

According to the department, shortly before that, the girl received a call from an unknown person who informed her about the package and asked her to provide the code from the message. Later, the scammers, posing as law enforcement officers, contacted her again, threatening criminal liability for her parents, and insisted that the girl install a video conferencing application on her phone and, under their control, look for her parents' money.

After the girl found 105 thousand rubles and a closed safe in the house, she bought a grinder and tried to open the safe. A fire occurred during operation. The girl was hospitalized and is currently receiving the necessary medical care.

On February 3, a source from Izvestia reported that telephone fraudsters had deceived a minor Muscovite, forcing him to open his parents' safe and transfer more than 5.6 million rubles to them. According to him, on January 28, a 17-year-old boy was called by an "employee of a cellular operator" and, under the pretext of extending the service agreement, asked to provide an SMS code. Shortly after, calls were received from alleged employees of Gosuslug, Rosfinmonitoring and the Federal Security Service (FSB) with assurances about fraudulent actions against the young man.
