- WSJ reported on Denmark's plans to spend $8.5 billion on defense due to Trump's threats
The Danish authorities, amid threats from American leader Donald Trump to take Greenland under US control, intend to allocate $8.5 billion for defense. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) wrote about this on October 10, citing data from its sources.
"Denmark plans to spend $8.5 billion on new ships and aircraft <...>. These investments are aimed at preventing President Trump's threat to seize Greenland," the newspaper writes.
It is specified that Copenhagen plans to allocate $ 4 billion of this amount to "protect the Arctic." The package will include the purchase or leasing of two new Arctic ships, a number of maritime patrol aircraft and drones." For the remaining amount, Denmark intends to purchase 16 new F-35 fighter jets from the United States.
Earlier, on August 23, a Boeing E-6 Mercury Doomsday aircraft was deployed at Pituffik base in Greenland. The representative of the US submarine forces noted that the strategic forces of the US Navy are conducting global operations in the Far North related to exercises in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said on June 17 that Trump had transferred Greenland from the European Command's area of responsibility to the control of the United States Northern Command. On June 20, the Danish government approved a law that would allow the United States to deploy military bases in the Kingdom. This decision gave the US military access to three key Danish air bases — Skridstrup, Karup and Aalborg. The agreement sparked protests across the country, with Danes shouting "Yankees, go home."
