This year's Nobel Peace Prize award has once again demonstrated her deep political bias and loss of objective criteria. This was stated to Izvestia by Maria Butina, a deputy of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs.

According to the parliamentarian, the award has long been transformed not into an assessment of real services to humanity, but into an instrument of political influence from the West.

"Awarding the prize to a radical oppositionist is just another confirmation of her commitment. There have already been examples in the history of the Nobel Peace Prize when it was awarded not to a peacemaker, but to someone who started wars and pursued an aggressive foreign policy. Let's recall Barack Obama, whose presidency was marked by interference in the affairs of other countries and rising international tensions. Such decisions have completely undermined the credibility of this award," Butina said.

The MP noted that against this background, an alternative international award, the Leo Tolstoy Peace Prize, is particularly important.

"While the Nobel Committee encourages destructive forces, the Tolstoy Prize follows the principles of humanism bequeathed by the great writer and celebrates those who truly create peace through their actions," she stressed.

Butina recalled that the winners of the Tolstoy Prize were the presidents of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, who diplomatically, without any external pressure, signed a historic agreement on the complete demarcation of borders.

"This is a concrete, tangible contribution to the stability and security of the entire region. This is a real example of peacemaking that deserves recognition, unlike dubious political gestures," the parliamentarian concluded.

According to the MP, the Leo Tolstoy Peace Prize today is a much more authoritative and objective marker of real achievements in strengthening international stability.

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on October 10 to Venezuelan politician Maria Corina Machado for fighting for the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and striving for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

At the same time, on August 13, the White House announced the nomination of American leader Donald Trump by seven states for the Nobel Peace Prize. Among those who supported this initiative were Prime Ministers of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, Cambodia Hun Manet, Presidents of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Gabon Brice Oligi Nguema, as well as the Government of Pakistan and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Rwanda Olivier Nduhirehe. On September 2, Trump himself responded negatively to a journalist's question about his desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. He added that he wants to be treated fairly for his services as president of the United States.

After awarding the Machado Prize, Stephen Chung, the White House Communications Director, said that the Nobel Committee had proved that it puts politics above peace. He added that the American leader will continue to make peace agreements, end wars and save lives.

In turn, Putin said that the decisions of the Nobel Committee had caused great damage to the prestige of the prize. The Russian leader added that if the American leader succeeds in completing all efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, it will be a historic event and achievement.
