Euractiv announced plans of the European Union to tighten visa policy
Brussels is preparing to introduce tougher measures for third countries as part of the European Union (EU) visa strategy, which may be adopted at the end of 2025. This was reported on October 10 by the Euractiv portal.
According to media reports, the visa regime may be tightened depending on how countries are ready to cooperate with the bloc in the field of migration. In addition, the EU intends to empower the European Commission (EC) to suspend or prohibit the issuance of visas to citizens of countries that have "seriously worsened" relations with the European Union.
Brussels will also introduce multiple-entry Schengen visas for "verified travelers" for 10 years, while at the same time organizing a system for reviewing visa-free regimes. This will allow you to cancel or suspend them faster.
Thus, the new visa support office of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) wants to turn visa policy into a kind of economic and geopolitical lever, the article says.
On September 15, the media reported that a number of EU countries were in favor of a complete ban on Russian tourists entering the bloc. The ban will require the support of a qualified majority of EU countries. At the same time, there are countries that are "relatively liberal in issuing visas," as they rely on the influx of Russian tourists during the holiday season, among them Hungary, Greece, Italy, Spain and France.
A day earlier, Germany complicated the criteria for issuing both Schengen and national visas to Russian citizens as part of the new, 19th package of anti-Russian sanctions. It clarifies that Russian applicants who do not have compelling reasons to travel should be prepared for longer and more thorough application review procedures.
