Psoriasis is a chronic, recurrent immune—inflammatory disease that most often affects the skin and nail plates. In more rare cases, joints and internal organs may be affected. Daria Dibrova, a Bioniq doctor, told Izvestia on October 11 about why psoriasis occurs and how to treat it.

"The development of psoriasis is caused by a genetic predisposition, stimulated by external environmental factors – triggers (cold, low temperatures, psycho-emotional stress, nervous overexertion, smoking, alcohol consumption, excess weight, various skin lesions, including tattoos, insect bites, infectious diseases). The exact cause of the disease is not fully known," the specialist said.

According to her, scientists have identified several genes called PSORS (Psoriasis Susceptibility Loci) that increase the likelihood of developing the disease. The presence of these genes does not guarantee the appearance of psoriasis, but the risk increases significantly, especially if close relatives already have the disease.

Dibrova stated that if a person has a rash, itching, peeling, or so-called scales and plaques, which can be removed with a shiny red film and small spot bleeding, then the likelihood of psoriasis is very high. She also stressed that the manifestations of psoriasis can be diverse and non-specific, so only a dermatologist can make an accurate diagnosis after a face-to-face examination of the patient.

As for the treatment of this disease, the doctor added, local hormonal drugs such as glucocorticosteroids are used for mild forms, sometimes in combination with salicylic acid. These products can be used in the form of creams, ointments or lotions for external use.

"Sometimes phototherapy can be prescribed to enhance the effect (these are special lamps that can be in hospitals / dermatologist's offices or purchased for home use, strictly as prescribed by a doctor). In severe, generalized forms of psoriasis, systemic centrally acting drugs may be recommended that target the parts of the immune system that are responsible for the development of psoriasis," the specialist concluded.

Earlier, on September 21, Zarema Omarova, a dermatologist, cosmetologist, and co-owner of Dr. Omarov's clinic network, told Izvestia about methods for quickly getting rid of age spots. According to her, UV exposure is one of the most common causes of excessive pigmentation. It was noted that with the right approach, "sun" and age spots can be completely removed.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
