Vladimir Golubev, President of the Russian Cynological Federation, told whether it is necessary to give a dog vitamin D.

In an interview with Radio 1 on Friday, October 10, the expert noted that with the onset of cold weather and shorter daylight hours, dogs really need additional vitamin D, as walks become less intense. He advised the owners to consult with a veterinarian to choose the right dosage, taking into account the age and size of the pet.

The specialist explained that vitamin D plays a key role in maintaining the immune system, helps the body fight diseases and prevent the development of neoplasms. It is also necessary for bone strength, and its deficiency can lead to osteoporosis and an increased risk of fractures, especially in active and large dogs.

The risk of vitamin deficiency in animals is higher than in humans, since dense wool interferes with the production of D under the influence of the sun, Golubev pointed out. Therefore, it is important that the vitamin comes from food — it is found, for example, in egg yolks and fish. If the pet does not tolerate these products well, special supplements can be used.

The expert added that preference should be given to veterinary drugs from pet stores, rather than pharmacy ones, and choose liquid forms of the vitamin — they are easier to give to a pet.

In September, Golubev said that licking dogs is one of the main ways of social interaction. Thanks to the receptors located on the tongue, animals receive information, writes RT.

Also in September, a survey showed that more than a quarter of Russians do not want to walk their dogs. In particular, 26% of the respondents admitted that they dream of hiring a dog sitter for their pet, a person who can be trusted to take care of the dog, and 18% reported that their spouses or children walk with their pets.

In July, the specialist told us how to properly care for elderly dogs. According to him, older animals sleep more and lose interest in games — this is normal. It is important to ensure peace and from time to time include simple commands for mental activity.

In March, Golubev shared recommendations for strengthening the immune system of dogs. According to him, regular vaccinations reduce the risk of infections in dogs. Proper nutrition, appropriate to the age and activity level of the dog, plays a key role. However, it is better to select vitamins together with a veterinarian in order to avoid possible harm from incorrectly selected supplements, notes 360.ru .
