The statement by US President Donald Trump about the need to exclude Spain from NATO due to the low level of military spending will not lead to significant political consequences. Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, Professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, told Izvestia on October 10.

"Trump's attack on Spain will not entail tangible political consequences for either the United States or the EU. The American president has always spoken harshly about NATO countries that do not want to incur large military expenditures. This time, Spain was dealt. Moreover, this country is led by leftist forces — Trump's ideological enemies and big fans of the US Democratic Party," the expert said.

In addition, despite the deterioration of relations between Madrid and Washington, important NATO military facilities are located in Spain, which are used by the United States to maintain a military presence in the Arab world and Africa. Therefore, it is impossible to exclude the country from the alliance, concluded Feldman.

On October 9, Trump said that Spain should be excluded from the North Atlantic Alliance due to its low level of military spending. According to him, currently the states that are part of the alliance are acquiring "the best" weapons from his country, which include military aircraft and a number of other equipment.
