- Sweden will send more than $500 million to combat UAVs and components for fighter jets
Sweden intends to invest more than 5 billion Swedish kronor (about $524 million) on additional anti-drone systems and components for JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets. This was announced on October 10 on the website of the Ministry of Defense of the country.
Of this amount, 3.5 billion crowns (approximately $367 million) will be allocated for funds to combat UAVs, and 1.5 billion crowns (about $157 million) will be allocated for components for JAS 39 Gripen fighters.
"The government is currently taking steps to quickly put anti—drone capabilities into operation and increase the availability of our combat aircraft," Swedish Defense Minister Paul Johnson said in a statement.
It is noted that investments will be directed to the purchase of weapons and sensors to combat drones. Also on warning devices, jammers and interceptors to protect air bases.
The ministry clarified that the investments will allow the Swedish armed forces to reduce the order fulfillment time by eight years. So, as part of the initiative, the final delivery date in 2036 will now be postponed to 2028.
On August 5, the Swedish Ministry of Defense announced the allocation of $275 million to Ukraine as part of a new defense support package for the purchase of weapons from the United States. The aid package included air defense systems, missiles for the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system, anti-tank weapons, as well as ammunition and spare parts.
