The State Duma discussed the fight against "monsters with a smile"
The State Duma discussed a proposal to introduce a mandatory examination of toys and to combat products that, according to deputies, impose alien values on children. This was reported by RBC on October 9.
Yana Lantratova, chairman of the State Duma Committee on the Development of civil Society, said that modern toys are becoming a tool of hybrid warfare, through which alien values are imposed and "tear children away from their love for the Motherland." She focused on the products of large international companies such as Mattel, which have left Russia but continue to enter the country through parallel imports.
Lantratova proposed to create an institute of toys in Russia, which would deal not only with their development, but also with psychological assessment in order to avoid the impact of destructive toys on the child's psyche. She added that they are ready to allocate a territory for such an institute in Sergiev Posad.
MPs and panelists avoided mentioning real brands and figures, preferring to use abstract terms such as "blue monsters" and "monsters with smiles." Tatiana Butskaya, First Deputy chairman of the Committee for the Protection of the Family, called these toys symbols of destructive effects on children.
"We have social and sanitary expertise, but there is neither psychological nor pedagogical. And this leads to the fact that literally in one month the sales of these blue monsters increase a million times. Monsters increase a million times with a smile," said Butskaya.
The Financial Times newspaper reported on August 15 that the shares of the Chinese company Pop Mart, which produces Labuba dolls, fell by almost 25%. At the beginning of trading, the share price declined by almost 9%, which was the fastest drop in their value during the day since April 2, when US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of import duties on goods from most countries of the world.
