On October 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin reminded Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev of the apologies he had offered earlier for the tragedy with the AZAL Airline plane flying on the Baku–Grozny route.
"Even then, in the first telephone conversation, I apologized for the fact that the tragedy occurred in the skies of Russia, and expressed my most sincere condolences to the families of the victims," Putin said during a meeting with the head of Azerbaijan.

The Ministry of Transport of Azerbaijan called the preliminary cause of the disaster external interference. A criminal case was opened after the incident. According to the airline's list, there were 62 passengers and five crew members on board. A total of 38 bodies were found at the crash site. Three people from the crew survived. Seven Russians died in the plane crash, nine Russian citizens survived. Later, a special aircraft of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations delivered them to Moscow.
The Accident Investigation Commission flew to Brazil with the black boxes on December 29. CNN Brasil reported that the flight recorders will arrive in Brazil on December 31. It was clarified that nine foreign technical specialists will take part in the decryption together with CENIPA investigators: three from Kazakhstan, three from Azerbaijan and three from Russia. The preliminary results of the investigation into the Azal Air plane crash will be released within 30 days.
On January 3, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced that the black boxes from the crashed plane had been sent to Brazil to ensure the objectivity of the investigation.
