The number of conscientious objectors in Germany has reached its highest level in the last 14 years. This was reported on October 9 by the German magazine Focus.

"The number of conscientious objectors this year is approaching the highest level in the last 14 years. This is the result of a study by the Bundeswehr and the Federal Office for Family Affairs and Civil Society (BAFzA), which examines applications from people who do not want to fight," the material says.

The results of the study cited by the magazine show that by the end of August 2025, a total of 3,257 applications for military service had been received by the Bundeswehr career centers. In the four months to the end of the year, the number was exceeded by 9.2% compared to 2024, and at that time stood at 2,998. At the beginning of autumn 2023, there were 1,609 applications.

Germany and other EU countries have already begun to tighten their approaches to payments.

Alice Weidel, co-chairman of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, announced on October 8 that she did not support the German government's proposal for compulsory military service due to disagreement with policies towards other countries.
