In the coming days, the construction of the first reactor plant of the future nuclear power plant (NPP) in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan will begin. This was announced on October 9 by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during the second Central Asia—Russia summit in Dushanbe.

"A historic event will take place these days — the launch of joint projects for the construction of the first reactor unit of a future nuclear power plant and a multifunctional nuclear medicine center in Uzbekistan will be launched," he said on the website of the head of state.

Mirizeev noted that the energy cooperation of the Central Asian countries with Russia will become a factor of stability and sustainability of the region in the future. He recalled that Dushanbe and Moscow are currently implementing strategic projects together, including the development of gas pipelines and energy infrastructure.

On August 9, Director of the Atomic Energy Agency of Uzbekistan Azim Akhmedkhadzhayev reported that Uzbekistan plans to build a large nuclear power plant jointly with the Russian corporation Rosatom in a short time.

On April 23, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the agreement on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan was signed last year, but now the implementation of the plan is moving to the practice stage. He also stressed that Russia is ready to double gas supplies to Uzbekistan through the implementation of new infrastructure projects.
