- The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to the Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasnahorkai.
The Nobel Prize in Literature in 2025 was awarded to the Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasnahorkai for his "fascinating and visionary work, which confirms the power of art in the midst of apocalyptic horror." This is reported on the official website of the Nobel Committee.
Krasnakhorkai was born in 1954 in the Hungarian city of Gyula. He started writing as a student, and his first work was published in 1977 in the magazine Mozgo Vilag. Some of his works, including the novels Satantango ("Satanic Tango", 1985) and Az ellenallas melankoliaja ("Melancholia of Resistance", 1989), were adapted into films by Hungarian director Bela Tarr.
In 2015, Krasnakhorkai was awarded the International Booker Prize. His works have been translated into many languages, including Japanese and major European languages. In addition to novels, he also wrote screenplays, including work for films such as The Man from London and the Turin Horse.
The Nobel Committee called Krasnakhorkai "a great epic writer of the Central European tradition," noting that his work is characterized by absurdism and grotesque exaggerations, which makes his work unique in a literary tradition that stretches from Franz Kafka to Thomas Bernhard.
The day before, it was reported that the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to scientists Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar Yagi for their research on the development of organometallic frameworks.
