- The Russian Foreign Ministry welcomed the first peace agreements between Hamas and Israel
Russia welcomes the initial agreements between the Palestinian movement Hamas and Israel on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. This was stated on October 9 in a statement by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"The Russian side welcomes these agreements, which were largely made possible thanks to the persistent work of Egyptian, Qatari, Turkish and American mediators," the ministry's website says.
The diplomat noted that Russia considers it necessary for Israel and Hamas to fulfill all obligations on Gaza in full and without any failures. She expressed the hope that this time the truce would be sustainable.
"It is fundamentally important for us to put an end to the suffering of civilians. <...> This will contribute to long—term stabilization in the Gaza Strip, create conditions for the return of all internally displaced persons, and allow large-scale work to begin on the restoration of infrastructure that was almost completely destroyed during the fighting," the diplomat added.
She stressed that the diplomatic efforts of Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and the United States deserve high praise.
Israel and Hamas signed an agreement on a cease-fire and the release of hostages earlier on October 9. According to the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the ceasefire will come into force after the ratification of the agreement by the government, which will meet after a meeting of the Cabinet of Security Ministers.
The representative of the Government of the country, Shosh Bedrosian, said that after 24 hours after the meeting of the Israeli government, a 72-hour period for the release and return of hostages will begin.
