Lavrov suggested reviewing the functionality of Russian forces in Syria
On October 8, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in an interview with the Bridges to the East project, expressed the opinion that the role of Russian forces in Syria should be reviewed.
Lavrov noted that Russian forces will not remain in Syria against the will of the Syrian leadership, as Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stressed. However, according to him, the Syrian leadership and a number of countries in the region are interested in maintaining the Russian presence.
The minister added that the functionality of the Russian forces in Syria should be reformatted, since their presence is no longer associated with supporting the legitimate authorities against opposition forces.
"Of course, this is no longer a presence to support the legitimate authorities militarily against certain opposition forces. It is necessary to reformat the functionality," Lavrov said.
He also suggested the creation of a humanitarian hub in Syria as one of the obvious tasks that could be useful not only for Syrians, but also for other countries in the region.
