Tajikistan noted the importance of Putin's visit to the republic
The visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Tajikistan speaks about the importance of the republic for Russian foreign policy. On October 8, political analyst Muhammad Shamsiddinov told Izvestia.
"This is President Putin's first state visit to Tajikistan during his presidency. In other words, this is serious, since a state visit ranks higher than official and working visits. I think there is a message here that Tajikistan is still a serious vector of Russian foreign policy," he said.
According to Shamsiddinov, economic relations between Russia and Tajikistan continue to develop. In 2024, the trade turnover between the two countries amounted to about $2 billion, which makes Russia one of the leading trade partners of the republic. At the time of December 2024, Russia ranked second in terms of accumulated investments in Tajikistan's economy — about $2 billion dollars. According to the political scientist, Russian companies are actively investing in the most important sectors for Tajikistan, such as transport and logistics infrastructure and energy, including the construction of the Sangtuda-2 hydroelectric power plant, which provides 12% of the country's electricity generation.
Shamsiddinov also noted Russia's significant contribution to the humanitarian sphere of Tajikistan. The Russian Federation is the main destination for Tajik students, in 2024 there were more than 28 thousand students from the republic studying in Russia, the expert noted. In addition, Russia participates in the nutrition program for schoolchildren in Tajikistan, which covers about 500,000 students.
"Russia, as it were, is present in almost all major sectors of the Tajik economy. This once again underlines the allied relations between the two countries," Shamsiddinov stressed.
The political scientist also suggested that the topic of migration policy will be on the agenda of the negotiations between the Russian Federation and Tajikistan, as it has become the most pressing issue of bilateral relations over the past year and a half.
On September 8, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin announced that Putin would pay a state visit to Tajikistan on October 8. According to Pankin, Putin's meeting with President of the Republic Emomali Rahmon will give a new powerful impetus to the development of ties and open up new vectors for bilateral contacts.
Later, on October 7, Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov announced that after the completion of all events in Tajikistan, Putin would answer questions from the media on October 10.
