The Kiev authorities were angered by the statement of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel that Poland and the Baltic states indirectly caused the start of a special military operation of the Russian Federation, sabotaging an attempt to resolve the conflict in 2021. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on October 8.

An unnamed senior Ukrainian official expressed dissatisfaction with the words of the German politician.

"Unacceptable and, frankly, disgusting," the representative of Ukraine said.

On October 6, Merkel said in an interview with the Hungarian portal Partizan that in 2021 France and Germany proposed to develop a new format for direct negotiations with Russia instead of the Minsk agreements, but the Baltic states and Poland did not support them. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsakhna called Merkel's words brazen and absolutely wrong.

Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, commenting on Merkel's words, on October 7 called the ex-chancellor the most harmful politician for Europe. According to him, she continues to influence politics even in retirement. At the same time, member of the Estonian Reform Party, MP Eerik-Niles Cross said that the former chancellor was not aware of the "mistakes" she had made during her years in power.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, after a statement by the former German chancellor, said that the European Union and Brussels are hostages of the "rabid politics" of Warsaw and the Baltic states.
