AfD rejected the proposal for compulsory military service in Germany
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party does not support the proposal of the German government on compulsory military service due to disagreement with the policy on Ukraine. This was announced on October 8 by Alice Weidel, co-chair of the AfD.
"Our children, our sons, our servicemen will never die for Ukraine. We will reject the federal government's proposal on military service," Weidel wrote on Facebook (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
She added that the party does not intend to support the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.
On August 25, Thomas Rewekamp, chairman of the Bundestag Defense Committee, said that Germany would not be able to cover the needs of Bundeswehr soldiers only through voluntary conscription, as proposed by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. According to him, the current draft law on new military service does not yet meet the modern challenges of security policy.
On August 27, the Tagesspiegel newspaper reported that Revekamp considers it necessary to make military service in the Bundeswehr mandatory not only for men, but also for women. According to him, about 700,000 people graduate from German schools and universities every year, and the authorities need to explain to them that they must contribute to "peace, freedom, democracy and prosperity."
