The Russian side intends to impose retaliatory travel restrictions on diplomats from unfriendly countries if their leadership decides to restrict the movement of politicians from the Russian Federation through the Schengen area. This was announced on October 8 by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

"They should understand that we will respond to each step in a mirror manner. They will introduce some kind of travel restrictions, we will introduce for those representatives of unfriendly countries who will participate in this action," Ryabkov told reporters.

He added that he did not understand who would benefit from the restrictions. According to him, people who talk about restrictions on movement for Russian diplomats in the European Union (EU) no longer know how to get away with it.

Earlier, on October 7, the Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported that the EU had agreed to limit the travel of Russian diplomats within the bloc. According to the newspaper, the initiative put forward by the Czech Republic is part of a new package of sanctions from the European Union. Its adoption requires unanimous support, and Hungary, the last country to oppose the measure, withdrew its veto, sources told the newspaper.
