Auto expert predicted a price increase of 50% of popular models due to recycling
The expected introduction of a new recycling calculation mechanism from November 1 will make it unprofitable for private buyers to import about 50% of popular car models to Russia. This was stated by Andrey Osipov, Commercial Director of the Interleasing Group of Companies.
"Powerful BMW, Mercedes, Toyota brand cars will rise in price by about 30-40% for individuals. Hybrids and electric cars with a capacity of 400-800 horsepower will also noticeably increase in price, which will sharply reduce demand for them," Rossiyskaya Gazeta quoted Osipov as saying on October 8.
He noted that in the segment of new cars, models with engines with a capacity of more than 160 hp and a cost of up to 3 million rubles are most at risk of declining demand. The new scheme for calculating the recycling fee will make their import unprofitable, the expert said.
Demand will shift towards more affordable and low-power vehicles such as the Toyota Corolla, Audi A3, some Mercedes-Benz and BMW models, as well as right-hand drive variants.
Earlier that day, it was reported that, as stated by Anton Alikhanov, head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, there are "gray" schemes for importing cars in Russia, through which foreign cars are brought to individuals for resale under the guise of import. As a result, the disparity between import by an official dealer, a legal entity, and individuals becomes significant, he said, explaining the need for changes in recycling.
On September 30, it became known that the leader of the Fair Russia — For Truth faction, Sergei Mironov, sent a letter to the head of the Cabinet of Ministers, Mikhail Mishustin, with a proposal to abandon the increase in the recycling fee for cars, as well as to provide benefits for its payment to large families and members of their families.
