The Maritime Board has begun work on a comprehensive project for the development of the Arctic zone

On October 7, a meeting of the Scientific and Expert Council of the Marine Collegium was held in St. Petersburg, chaired by Nikolai Patrushev, Assistant to the President of Russia, and Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute Research Center. During the meeting, the start of work on a comprehensive project for the development of the Arctic zone and the Transarctic transport corridor was announced, which will combine current measures to ensure the environmental safety of the region.

"Issues related to the protection of the natural environment of the Arctic zone of Russia were discussed, taking into account the development of the Transarctic transport corridor and the industrial development of mineral resources in the Arctic," the press service of the Maritime Board reported.

The participants also discussed the preparation of updated versions of the Fundamentals of Russia's State Policy in the Arctic and the Strategy for the Socio-Economic Development of the Arctic zone, which will determine the goals of the region's development, taking into account changes in global politics and the economy.

In addition, measures were developed at the meeting to enhance scientific research to assess the impact of economic activity on the ecological state of the Arctic region.

Earlier in the day, Mikhail Kovalchuk, president of the Kurchatov Institute, said that the Transarctic Transport Corridor, passing through the North Seas and connecting the West with the East of Russia, would make the country beyond competition in terms of logistics. He added that Russia has tens of thousands of rivers, so the task of the Russian Federation is to repeat in the eastern part of the country what was done in the western part in the past centuries, namely— to connect the North and South of Russia with the help of rivers.
