According to the US Geological Survey, a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.6 occurred in Papua New Guinea, The New York Times reported on October 7.
"According to the agency, the earthquake occurred at 21:05 (14:05 Moscow time) in Papua New Guinea about 16 miles southwest of [the city of] Lae," the material says.
No possible injuries or damage have been reported.
Earlier, on October 4, an earthquake of magnitude 6 occurred off the coast of the Japanese island of Honshu. There was no information about casualties or damage, and no tsunami threat was announced.
