New GAZ Sobol with a bi-fuel engine presented in the Russian Federation
A new version of the popular low-tonnage off-road vehicle "Sable NN 4x4" was presented at the international gas forum in St. Petersburg. The car is equipped with a bi-fuel engine that can run on gasoline or compressed natural gas, according to a statement from Modern Transport Technologies (CTT), which was received by Izvestia on October 7.
This "Sable NN 4x4" has an Evotech A3055 engine with a volume of 3 liters. Gas cylinders are located under the floor of the body in the rear overhang (two 39 liters each) and inside the cargo compartment (two 80 liters each). The total refueling volume is 50 cubic meters of gas, the range at one gas station reaches 360 km. The car has a six-seater cabin and a cargo compartment with a volume of more than 4 cubic meters.
STT also brought a number of other gas models to the exhibition. The medium-tonnage cargo "Gazon NEXT 8,7 CNG" hood arrangement is equipped with a new engine "YaMZ-535 CNG" with a displacement of 5,1 liters (170 hp; 660 Nm; Euro-5). Seven steel gas cylinders are mounted on the frame (four across and three along). The Valdai 12 CNG bonnetless tank has the same engine. It uses four metal composite cylinders for storing compressed natural gas, placed vertically in a special holder behind the cabin, with a total refueling volume of 100 cubic meters.
Another model, the Valdai 45 LNG truck tractor for long-haul transportation as part of a road train with a total weight of up to 45 tons, is capable of traveling up to 1,200 km without refueling. It has an inline six-cylinder engine with a volume of 14.8 liters (570 hp; Euro-5), which runs on liquefied natural gas. Two cryogenic gas cylinders with a total volume of 950 liters are installed on the left and right sides of the frame within the wheelbase. To install the cylinders, the wheelbase was increased to 4,200 mm compared to the diesel version of the tractor.
Also at the exhibition on October 7, KAMAZ demonstrated for the first time the KamAZ-52229 tourist bus, the model belongs to the new generation A5 and runs on compressed natural gas (CNG). The cabin has 47 seats, a kitchen unit with a refrigerator and a toilet.
Prior to that, on September 24, it was reported that Nizhny Novgorod had localized the production of turbodiesel engines for GAZ —Sobol, Gazelle and Valdai commercial vehicles. These models have been equipped with such a motor since 2023, but before that the units were manufactured in China.
