- The American expert assessed the possibility of transferring Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine
US President Donald Trump has not outlined a clear position on the supply of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. Grigory Yarygin, Associate Professor of the Department of American Studies at St. Petersburg State University, said this on Tuesday, October 7.
"It seemed to me that this was not a final decision. If it had been accepted, he would have said directly and clearly that these missiles would be delivered," he said in an interview with RT.
The expert also noted that the American leader did not specify how these missiles could be delivered — through the Europeans or directly to Kiev.
"That is, he still takes a thoughtful position, presents it as such and tries to put pressure on Russia with the help of such statements," he explained.
According to Yarygin, if the decision is made, the United States will transfer the missiles, but along with this, technology and specialists are usually transferred.
Earlier this day, Yuri Kamelchuk, a deputy from the Servant of the People party of President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky, expressed doubts about the imminent transfer of Tomahawk missiles to Kiev, Regnum news agency reports. He expressed the hope that Washington would not provide missiles to Kiev, writes Life.Ru . According to the Ukrainian politician, the US administration uses the issue of missiles as a means of putting pressure on Russia.
On October 2, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine would mean a new stage of escalation, including between the Russian Federation and the United States. According to him, the country will improve its air defense system and will start shooting down Tomahawk on approach.
At the same time, the Reuters news agency reported that the United States was unlikely to decide to transfer Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, despite reports from representatives of the presidential administration about possible supplies. It was clarified that these plans are not feasible, since the current reserves are intended for the US Navy and other purposes.
Later, on October 3, American columnist Ted Snyder drew attention to the fact that the United States would most likely not be able to supply Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles or, possibly, would do so in limited quantities. According to him, currently the United States itself has a small number of missiles, while producing less than 200 units per year.
