The State Traffic Inspectorate reported a decrease in the number of "drunk" accidents in Russia

From January to September 2025, 7,9 thousand were recorded in Russia. Accidents involving drivers who are intoxicated, which is 12.3% less than in the same period last year. This was announced on October 7 by the head of the Department for the promotion of road safety and prevention of child traffic injuries of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Police Colonel Sergei Hrantskevich, the Izvestia correspondent reports.

2.1 thousand people died in such accidents, and more than 10 thousand people were injured (a decrease of 23.5% and 10.6%, respectively).

In addition, according to the results of the first nine months of this year, over 1,700 were recorded. Accidents involving drivers who refused medical examinations, which is 7.1% less than last year. 104 people were killed and over 2.4 thousand injured in such accidents (a decrease of 1.9% and 8.2%, respectively). This year, 189,000 administrative cases were initiated for driving under the influence of alcohol.

"These figures reflect not only the optimistic dynamics that has been observed over the past few years, but also the fact that drunkenness at the wheel remains a serious problem of road safety. Reducing accidents means saving people's lives. We are all aware that deaths and injuries on the roads cause considerable damage to the economy and demography of the state," Hrantskevich said at the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation during a round table dedicated to the prevention of driving while intoxicated.

In 2024, with a decrease in the number of accidents involving drivers who were intoxicated or refused medical examinations (-0.03%), as well as the number of injured (-1.5%), the death toll in such accidents increased by 6.8%, the department said.

On September 12, it became known that following the results of eight months of 2025, Moscow recorded a decrease in the number of accidents involving drivers with signs of intoxication by 30.5%. The number of people killed and injured in road accidents caused by drunk drivers also decreased by 70.9% and 20.4%, respectively, during this period.
