Rui Costa, president of the board of the Benfica football club, will appear in court over a €76,000 money transfer from the Russian club Lokomotiv to the Lisbon club's account to repay the debt for the transfer of a football player to the Russian club. This was reported on October 7 by CNN Portugal.

It is noted that the charges are related to the transfer of Argentine defender Herman Conti to a Russian club in 2023. Thus, a monetary transaction to pay off a debt for an athlete violated European legislation regarding anti-Russian sanctions. At the same time, Costa was supposed to be questioned in July last year, but asked to postpone the meeting.

According to the newspaper, the transaction was detected by a financial institution, as a result of which the monetary transaction was suspended by the local prosecutor's office. It is noted that the money was returned to Lokomotiv in Russian accounts. Currently, the prosecutor's office intends to request the suspension of the proceedings after payment of the fine.

In addition, according to Portuguese law, the president of a football club can be prosecuted and imprisoned for a period of one to five years.

On September 24, it was reported that ten-time biathlon world champion Julia Simon will appear in court on charges of theft and fraud. In 2023, the biathlete was arrested on suspicion of using other people's bank cards to make purchases in online stores during the Blinkfestivalen ski and roller festival in Norway in 2022. It was clarified that the damage is estimated at € 1-2 thousand.
