US President Donald Trump has ordered an end to attempts to reach a peaceful settlement of the military escalation with Venezuela. This was reported on October 6 by The New York Times (NYT), citing sources.

"During a meeting with senior military leaders, Trump called [the US president's special envoy for special assignments] Richard Grenell and instructed him that all diplomatic contacts, including negotiations with [Venezuelan President Nicolas] Maduro, should be terminated," the article says.

According to the newspaper, the Trump administration has developed several military escalation plans, some of which are aimed at removing Maduro from office.

In addition, the publication noted that Trump is ready to use "all elements of American power" to stop the penetration of drugs into the United States. The American leader also made it clear in his messages to Maduro that it was necessary to put an end to Venezuelan drug trafficking.

On October 5, Trump announced during events marking the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy that American troops had launched another attack on a ship off the coast of Venezuela, which was allegedly involved in drug trafficking.
