The decision to include new states in the European Union (EU) is made by the alliance itself, and not by the leaders of the countries wishing to join it, this rule also applies to Ukraine. This was announced on October 6 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

"To what extent which country is ready for EU membership and which country can join the European Union will be decided not by the President of Ukraine [Volodymyr Zelensky], but by the European Union itself, where such decisions require unanimity," he wrote on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

Szijjarto clarified that the citizens of his state had the opportunity to express their will on this issue, which the Government of the republic represents in the de facto capital of the alliance — in Brussels.

On August 26, political scientist Alexander Asafov called the chances of candidate countries joining the EU "low". According to him, this process can take a very long time, even despite the ongoing discussions.
