Orban accused Zelensky of moral blackmail to gain EU support
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky uses moral blackmail tactics to force the countries of the European Union (EU) to support his military efforts and Kiev's accession to the EU. This was announced on October 6 by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
"It turns out that Zelensky wants to decide what is best for Hungarians. He is once again using his usual tactics of moral blackmail to push countries to support his war efforts," Orban wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
The Prime Minister stressed that Hungary has no moral obligations to support Ukraine's accession to the EU and expressed confidence that blackmail would not be used to achieve such goals.
He noted that, according to the EU treaty, the issue of membership is decided unanimously by all member states. The Hungarian people have already spoken out against Ukraine's accession to the EU in a referendum.
The prime minister added that Zelensky's media campaign against Hungary is unlikely to help change public opinion and improve relations with other countries.
On October 6, Zelensky proposed to change the procedure for Ukraine's accession to the EU in order to circumvent Hungary's veto, which blocks the country's progress towards unification. According to the Ukrainian leader, the fact that Orban is the only person who slowed down the accession will remain in history.
