- The WSJ has learned about the creation of secret battery parks in Ukraine to support the electric grid
A network of American-made battery stations has been deployed in Ukraine, designed to provide electricity during winter shelling. This was reported on October 5 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
According to the publication, the network includes six battery parks located in Kiev and the Dnipropetrovsk region. Each park consists of a row of white battery packs about 2.5 meters high. The total capacity of the system is 200 MW, which makes it possible to supply electricity to approximately 600,000 homes for two hours, which helps restore power supply after shelling and prevent a blackout.
A notable feature of the batteries is their modularity: each unit can be disconnected and replaced without affecting the rest.
"Minimal equipment is required to replace the unit, and all of them have fire safety functions, which is extremely important in Ukraine," said Julian Nebreda, CEO of Fluence, which supplied the batteries.
The project was launched in July 2025 jointly with Fluence and the Ukrainian energy company DTEK. The work was completed in August 2025, and the project cost was $140 million. Commercial operation of the batteries is expected to begin in October 2025, at the start of the heating season in Ukraine.
On October 1, it was reported that a bright flash occurred in the sky over the Dnieper River (formerly Dnepropetrovsk), followed by a blackout.
