Former European Commissioner Breton pointed to the weakening of the EC
The European Commission (EC) is seriously weakened, as can be seen from the increase in the number of votes of no confidence. This was announced on October 6 by former European Commissioner for the Internal Market of the European Union (EU) Thierry Breton.
"The European Commission is seriously weakened. For the first time in a long time, the commission has faced so many votes of no confidence," he said in an interview with Politico newspaper.
Breton noted that this state of affairs of the EC cannot be attributed to "the result of bad luck." According to him, the problems in the EC come directly from the weakness of its leadership, which may allow "extreme elements" to take advantage of the situation. Breton did not specify which "elements".
Earlier in the day, Politico noted that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is under constant threat of a vote of no confidence. According to the publication, on October 6, the head of the EC will have to address the European Parliament (EP) to defend his reputation, just three days before the second vote of no confidence in the last three months. Even with the current support of the centrists in parliament, the situation could change at any moment.
Prior to that, on September 16, Politico reported that the EP would discuss and then vote on two votes of no confidence in von der Leyen at the plenary session from October 6 to October 9. It is clarified that the far-right "Patriots for Europe" and "Leftists" submitted separate votes of no confidence in von der Leyen on September 10.
