Nutritionist dispelled myths about palm oil
Palm oil has beneficial natural properties and no health risks when used correctly. Alexey Kabanov, a nutritionist and deputy director of the SIC "Healthy Nutrition", dispelled the myths associated with this product on October 10 in an interview with Izvestia.
"Due to its natural semi-hardness, palm oil eliminates the need for a hydrogenation process, preventing the appearance of trans fatty acids. This means reducing the level of potentially dangerous components in food," the expert noted.
However, according to Kabanov, many mistakenly believe that palm oil causes cancer. Currently, there is no scientific evidence to confirm the association of consumption of this product with the development of cancer. On the contrary, red palm oil can be useful for cancer prevention, as it is rich in vitamin E, which reduces the risk of tumors.
The nutritionist also dispelled the myth that palm oil negatively affects the heart and blood vessels.
"Palm oil contains a large amount of saturated fats. Global dietary guidelines recommend limiting their consumption to 10% of the daily ration, as their overabundance can provoke diseases of the cardiovascular system. But sources of saturated fats are also animal products. Thus, it is necessary to monitor nutrition in general, and not only limit the use of palm oil," the expert emphasized.
In addition, Kabanov added, there is a misconception that palm oil contributes to weight gain. According to him, the main reasons for weight gain are an unbalanced diet, a lack of vegetables, fruits and lack of physical activity. He stressed that one product alone is not capable of causing weight gain.
